  • Morane Saulnier AI Type XXVII & XXIX propeller and or technical information wanted

I am looking for a propeller to fit a Morane Saulnier AI type 27 or 29 fighter fitted with a Gnome 9N engine. I believe they were fitted with Levasseur type 281 propellers? But I know they were also fitted with other types of propellers also. Ideally I would like to find an original propeller to copy or drawings or technical information to allow me to make a new one. Many thanks for any help that you can provide. Best wishes Pat

    Hi,

[Edit on] First: serial 281 have to be a typo: such a serial number can't be for a WW1 aircraft for a Levasseur prop. But [Edit off]

I have some references for propellers used on Morane XXVII and AI fitted with a 150 HP Gnome. All come from Gorrell's papers except one from Hartmann (hydroretro site, not very reliable):
    - Chauviere serial 2234-1
    - De La Granville serial 4
    - Eclair serial 162B
    - Levasseur serial 577 (Hartmann)
    - Levasseur serials 581, 581bis and 582

I don't think any blue print has survived but original Levasseur could be find: I have seen three serial 581 and one serial 582 (stamped for Morane fitted with Gnome 150 HP).
I have have also seen three De La Granville serial 4 but all were stamped for Nieuport, the same for the only one Levasseur 577 I saw.

    Regards,
    PM

Hi PM, I was working from memory and obviously my memory is not what it was! It should of course be 581 not 281. The original prop is a great find, is it available to scan or even to buy? If I can measure and scan it I will be able to make a new one.

      Many thanks for your help!

      Best wishes Pat

        Hi,

The Levasseur 581 props I saw, it was some years ago. I am not sure it is still possible to trace the today proprietary, which, anyway, is probably in France. But all the Levasseur are made with the same shape, so anyone with dimensions not to far from the 581 could be "scanned" (how do you do that?) and the scan modified to "make" a 581. It depends for which usage is your project: could you tell more about that?

        Regards,
        PM

Hi PM, I have an original Morane Saulnier Type XX project that I am going to restore to fly as a type XXVII or XXIX, the difference being one or two guns. I have an almost complete Gnome 9N that I am restoring and will obviously need a propeller. The drawings state that the propeller is 2.6 metres so I assume the only difference from another series of Levasseur propeller would be the pitch? I would scan the propeller with a 3D laser scanner and then produce a CAD model and drawings from that.

Many thanks for your help! Joyeux Noel!

          Regards Pat

            Very interesting goal!

Levasseur 581 is 250 cm long, has a pitch of the same value (250 cm) and a blade width of 182 mm ( a narrow blade, thus). The hub is 150 mm thick and it is a B type. All these measure from Gorrell (History of the American Expeditionary Forces Air Service 1917-1919). I join a page, taken from FootNote before it became Fold3. I join also a screen copy of my Excel sheet showing the Levasseur props with dimensions not far from the 581. I think it is possible to make a 581 if you find anyone listed.

            Regards,
            PM
