  • Forward firing through prop

Is it true that before interrupter gear was fitted to WW1 scouts, that steel plates were fitted to deflect any bullets? If so what was the rate of 'hits' from say, twin guns, and also wasn't it chancy that they might ricochet off and cause damage to other parts of the aircraft (not to mention the pilot)
    thanks

The idea was certainly tried experimentally by Roland Garros in 1915, with some success (although I have read that engine life was shortened by the crankshaft having to take the strain from bullets hitting the propeller).

Thanks for the response. I can imagine that such impacts would have a detrimental effect on the engine!
