  • SE5a prop history

    Hi Bob,

It's been a while but I was wondering if you might be able to give me some manufacturing history for this prop please? I think I've attached the photo.

    Hello Robyn,

Good to hear from you again!

This is a superb prop that has led a sheltered life and has been beautifully conserved or restored.

    The data translates thus:
T28137 The drawing number of the prop designed by Royal Aircraft Factory
Left Hand The rotation of the engine, which indicates that this is a geared propeller, hence the large pitch
200hp Hispano-Suiza The engine designed by a Swiss man and financed by a French industrialist.
SE5A The aircraft, also designed by the Royal Aircraft Factory
WD O 3300 The mark of the man who made the prop WD Oddy of Leeds
    D2514 P2800
    Diameter and pitch.

The Oddy Company was paid £22-5s-0d for this prop. It dates from the Spring or Summer of 1917.

    With kind regards,

    Bob
