  • DH Moth propeller

This is a copy of a request for help which I received privately, copied here for forumites and visitors. This type of prop from the DH Moth series of aircraft turns up quite often in Britain. The aircraft had several variants, all of which were the dominant private aircraft in Britain in the 1930's

    Hello Bob,
I have a prop and would like more info. It's wood, twin blade, looks like copper protection on leading edge and is painted in drab olive green.

    Ray,

Your prop is from a de Havilland DH60 Moth, first made in 1926.

The prop was made in 1929 and has a diameter of 6ft and a pitch of 4.3ft. It had a 60hp Cirrus engine. I don't think that the Cirrus engine was still in production in 1929. It had been replaced by the DH Gipsy engine by then, but propellers would still be in production for the Cirrus engine as part of the spares backup.

The drab green paint might well indicate that the aircraft was taken over by the RAF during WW2.

    With regards,

    Bob
