identify possible german (european?) 280cm propeller wood/brass

Hi all,

I inherited a wooden propeller (maybe german/european)
and have no clue about its history
(only hint: maybe it was bought in Dessau/former East germany)

Its diameter is 280cm (about 110inch) and the hub is 80mm
diameter. There are some numbers (nearly unreadable) close to
the hub.

Please help me to identify the type / year of manufacture/
possible value...

Without any numbers it will be very difficult to identify. If it is German (which it could be) it's likely that it was made after WW1, since metal sheathing is uncommon in WW1 era German propellers.

I would just suggest starting with a close look at the hub dimensions and see if you can identify the engine that it would fit. Sometimes if you know the likely engine the numbers can be inferred from that.

It has been refinished, which lowers its value significantly.

Could you also post close up photos please of the data which is stamped on the prop, either on the side of the hub or on the blade near the blade root. Even if this is almost decipherable, we might identify your prop from it.

dimensions and further details to 280cm prop

Hi all,

1) just measured again:

B = center bore diameter: 80mm
C = bolt hole circle: 150mm
D = wooden hub diameter: 206mm
G = hub thickness/height: 135mm
E = number of bolt holes: 8
F = bolt hole diameter: 11mm

(as seen on pic prop_hub.jpg, the 8 holes are aligned
with 22,5 degree "offset" from 12'o clock position)


2) @Bob: no numbers found on the side of the hub or at the tips.

Good Afternoon Esko,

Your prop is certainly of German construction and almost certainly it is a Type 95 Axial prop made for the Albatros DV around 1916. The diameter for this prop is 2770mm and the diameter was often repeated on the hub and is on yours as 277.
