  • Gipsy Major Propeller

    Good morning,

I have a propeller that I inherited from my father who served in WW2.

It is identified below the hub as Gipsy Major 1C. Above that lettering is embossed L.D.H.5220-2.

It measures 76" tip to tip, has a 5" hub surrounded by 8 tiny holes, presumably for mounting.

It has a clear finish, and has an RCAF decal on each blade.

I have been looking at this thing hanging on the wall for years, and would now like to know more about it.

Any information about this piece of history would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Peter L.

Bob Gardner can probably tell you more specifics about it, but if you look at this page (from the sticky at the top of the category) you can see many different applications of the D.H. 5220 basic model, and those for use with the Gypsy 1 are noted. I'm not sure how your /2 applies with all of the /letter numbers listed, but maybe Bob will know.

It might be possible to narrow it down to a specific model of aircraft, but it's almost impossible to expect to know its use on an actual airplane, if in fact it was ever even mounted on one.

Many thanks for your info, and guidance.

It appears that it never was mounted on an airplane. I'll check further as per your suggestion. (What would be the value?)

      Thanks again!
