  • Propeller identification

    Hi,

Does anyone perhaps know of the aircraft with which this propeller was attached to.

Its a complete wooden propeller with a brass leading edge rivited on.
These numbers are attached to the base of it,
D210392 followed by a circle with the letter A and numbers 77, in it.
followed by another circle with the letter A and numbers 76, in it.
there is also the numbers in a rectangle of RA-5812 and next to them the numbers 33054

More measurements for the 1 single blade:

    Total length 1580mm
    Boss 150mm
    Widest part of blade 296mm
Length of brass leading edge 1040mm / 41 rivets

I've had it for about 20 years sitting in the study, it was found in a pub in Johannesburg South Africa, I have no definite proof of which aircraft it came from, im thinking its either a spitfire or a hurricane, but thats just a guess, I would love to know what exact aircraft it once belonged to.

    Hope someone can help,
    thank you

I would try contacting Monte Chase on his web site at www.notplanejane.com. Your prop is one blade of a variable pitch prop. I have no way of identifying it but Monte may be able to.

          Good Morning Lamar,

          Good to hear from you.

I also learn something new each day, but mostly these are things I forgot two days ago.

          With kind regards,

              hurricane propeller

              Hi,

I live in Johannesburg and have had a similar propeller for the last 20 years !

Mine is in better condition than richie's , except that some idiot drilled a hole
in it to accommodate a clock .

The numbers on mine are :
              D147974
              A63
              RA-5812
              23185

Thank you Bob for your positive ID, someone told me that after WW11 they were selling off all sorts of things in Joburg, you could buy a complete Spitfire for very little, and I am guessing that a whole batch of these spare
              props were auctioned off ?

Thought I might offer mine to the Museum here, as I really would like more people to see it, it really is a work of art, very intricate construction and beautiful lines.

thanks everyone for the replies, helped a lot.

@Dalmation, how funny would it be if your prop was the other side of mine! I don't suppose you got it from Kyalami in the old days did you? Maybe you can post some photos of it?

                Cheers
