  • Wotan propeller

    Hello

First sorry for my bad english ...

I am lookink for informations about a Wotan propeller inherited from my great-grandfather, who was in the "french aeronautic mission in Russia" in 1917.
    I have only the half of this propeller (total length : 155cm x 2 = 310cm)
I have attached a pdf file with a schema of the hub, with measures.
There is no word or letter on the prop., only numbers : see attached pictures.

Could you help me to find :
    - the type of engine ?
    - the type of airplane ?

All my family is very interesting to learn more about this propeller.

    Thank you very much.

    Bonjour Nicholas,

    Bienvenue à notre forum.

Your prop blade is a lovely example and probably the best example of a Wotan prop blade that I have seen. Please confirm that there are no numbers or letters on the curved outside of the hub.

Wotan props of 3100mm were used with a 260cv Mercedes engine on the Gotha G9 bomber. Two complete examples are owned by the Musée Royal de l'Armée et d'Histoire Militaire en Bruxelles.

The Wotan decal is also the best that I have seen. Could you take a high resolution photo for me of just the decal which I would like to use in my book on German propellers, with your permission. Send to aeroclocks at btinternet dot com.

The two black birds, one on each side of the decal are Wotan's Ravens (corbeau, je crois) and are called in Norse, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory).

    With kind regards,

    Bob

I wonder if the OP ever followed up with a better photo of the decal? I am looking to create decals for a scale model and am in need of a good reference image.

      I found this:

      http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_75...29/key_/tm.htm

      (scroll down towards the bottom)

But it doesn't depict the ravens as mentioned and shown here.

      Cheers,

      Tony

Thank you from me too Nicholas!

I have just finished my series of books on British WW1 Props and am now starting on a series on German props. I will use your photograph in the section on Wotan if I may. I'll probably clean up the scratches etc with photoshop, as well, to give an example of a pristine decal.

Wotan decals do not survive well and yours is about the best that I have seen.

              Bonjour Bob,

No problem, you can use the photo for your books. I can send you a photo with a higher resolution if you want.

              With kind regards,

              Nicolas

Yes please Nicolas. A photo at a resolution of 3 to 4mb will be excellent for publication. Please send to aeroclocks at btinternet dot com (written phonetically to evade the SPAM robots.)
