It's too short to have been used on the typical aircraft of that era. It might be a generator or some other kind of auxilliary prop.

Hello Dave,
My description wasn't too clear. This is only one half of the full propeller, one blade in other words.

I am attempting to up-load pictures right now. I'm afraid my computer skills are somewhat limited.

Well, that fits then , as far as size goes.

Nice looking detail. It's extremely hard to identify what the usage was by a blade alone. Some companies may have made hundreds of different models, although I'm not sure this company is one of those.

Bob Gardner (who is currently unavailable for about a week or two) may have some comment on his return.

Many thanks for your help on the blade. Because of my interest in the Hawker Typhoon and the fact a rare Typhoon throttle quadrant has just been spotted on a well known internet site I may well be selling this. Is it okay to sell it on the forum?

Good Morning Ian,

This is a nice prop blade.

Maple were one of the best cabinet makers in Edwardian times and were roped into making props during WW1.

This blade is from a four bladed prop made for the DH4 powered by the Rolls Royce Eagle engine. The engine was intended for twin engined aircraft as well as single engined ac such as the DH4 and therefore was built in both right hand and left hand rotation. The red band on yours indicated RH rotation (I think, without looking it up to confirm ) and the arrow shows the direction of rotation. Left hand engines had a blue band.

Have you put it on eBay yet? I hope to bid for it.

Single blades from WW1 are not worth very much, I regret to say, and generally sell for around 80 gbp, about 150 usd. I think the most I have ever paid was 120 gbp.

But the advantage of selling at auction, such as eBay, is that it will find its own value. And you only need two enthusiasts who are determined to own it, and they will push the price up.

In their wisdom, ebay removed the blade on the grounds that I mentioned and recommended both woodenpropeller.com and aeroclocks. They stated that I wasn't allowed to 'promote' other web-sites.
