  • A success !

    Dave,

I have a success to record! I am often asked for plans of WW1 or pre-WW1 propellers and I almost always have to answer that I have written books about WW1 Propeller Makers, not propellers per se! Today I was asked by one, Tom Chambers, if I could provide plans for a pre-WW1 propeller for a 25hp Deperdussin aero engine. Here, below, is his email.

    Hello
I am a model engineer who is building a 1/4 scale working model of an Anzani Y configuration aero engine of WW1 vintage. My limited research shows that this type of engine at 25HP rating was used on the Deperdussin Monoplane School Type. I believe the propeller was made by the EBORA company. I am trying to obtain a suitable propeller for this engine. Many other builders of the model engine have been forced to use available commercial model props of a more recent vintage. I would like to try and get a prop that looks right for the engine. I realise that this will entail making my own. I am writing therefore to ask which, if any, of your books would give me design details ( aero foil shapes, plan view , side view etc) of a suitable propeller of WW1 vintage AND give me some guidance on how to proceed to make such a prop. If you have a suitable book what is the cost of the least expensive copy available. Many thanks for your help.

Here below is my reply to him.

    Trevor,

I am delighted to be able to tell you that I have a great deal of information about the Ebora propeller company, an English company run in England by a Dutchman, one Jan Schiere. During my research I was able to find his relatives in den Nederland; his son and grandson; and they discovered in their attic Jan Schiere's archive, most of which I photographed and is incorporated in Part Two of my series on British WW1 Aircraft Propellers. So, there are about fifty pages about Ebora in Part Two, with photographs of nine decals, seven propellers and six plans of propellers. This includes an Ebora Type 1 propeller for a 28-50hp engine and I much hope this will prove to be perfect for you. It gets better still ! I have a 'seconds' copy of part two which you can have for half price. It was returned by a customer because the spine was damaged. The book is complete and perfectly readable. It retails for £38.00, so £19.00 at half price. Postage and packing amount to £4.90, giving a total £23.90. I will invoice you via PayPal once you acknowledge this email. I cannot tell you how much I rejoice at being able to give such a complete answer.

    With kind regards,

    Bob

    And here is his reply!

Thank you Bob for your reply. I was beginning to give up hope of finding the information I was after until i stumbled upon “ aeroclocks”. Yes I would like to purchase the second hand copy of part 2 of your book.
