  • SE-5a Propeller Memorial

I have the priviledge of being the project manager for the restoration of the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Antigua West Indies. We have a wooden propeller light fixture that was hung in our memorial chapel to honour the memory of Captain Ian McDonald.

He was an ace with 20 victories and he flew an SE-5a.

The propeller has since been removed in order for us to repair the roof. I want to restore this memorial back to its former glory but I do not want to do anything that will comprimise its value, beauty and historical integrity.

Varnish is deteriorating in several places, there is a split at the seam of one of the laminations and the cloth tip fabric ends are starting to come off. I am seeking advice on the best way forward in restoring this in order to honour the memory of this brave man.
